MUSIC: Danny Elfman, de "Pee-Wee Big Adventure" à "Alice aux pays des merveilles"/from ""Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" to "Alice in Wonderland"

Enjoy!
Prior to the revelation of the winners of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, little flashback on the bubbles adventures of Sébou, Tsunami and Luigi. Result: eight Cannes bubbles between childhood and adolescence, cheats and speculation, discovery and disappointment, coincidence and reflection. Enjoy!

CINEMA: Bulle Cannoise #8, l'art de la triche/the art of cheating
This day started exactly like the previous one ended. That is, by not respecting the usual protocol. You may know that, in order to gain access to a party, one needs an invitation : well, a simple empty cup can also do the trick ; the security will think you were already inside and will let you in. Another example : when you've been queueing for an hour outside the movie theater, you don't accept that someone passes in front of you. But if you don't notice him, then he can get away with it. Cheating is a profession.

In the afternoon in Cannes, a rather interesting phenomenon happens. Imagine that you have barely slept, probably been partying, the night before. Then imagine that you wish to attend a screening during the afternoon : at least one hour before the beginning, you come in front of the theater to start waiting in order to be sure you shall make it inside. Important detail: you must wait under the French Riviera's full sun. Finaly, imagine that you're watching Film Socialisme by Jean-Luc Godard.

Screenings of the Un Certain Regard selection traditionaly take place in the Debussy theater. Much smaller than the Grand Théâtre Lumière, that theater is also more pleasant and convivial. Yesterday, there was the screening of Jia Zhangke's film I wish I knew, in presence of the director and his actress Zhao Tao.

The evening prestigious screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière obey to a very strict dress code, at least for men. At one of the many checkpoints one has to pass before entering the theater, an agent actually checks everyone's dress. Black trousers and jacket, black shoes, white or black shirt, black bow-tie (no tie). Voilà. To a man who perhaps didn't know about the bow-tie, a control agent gave his own. Movie stars, whose eccentricities are easily forgiven, don't really have to comply with the code. I dream of walking the red carpet in a naked body-styled tuxedo.

Among the myriad of posters that cover the walls of the Short Film Corner, that of Secret Tunnel by Chinese director Xueqing XI immediatly catches the eye with its design and vivid colors. Magnificent, the movie is like its poster: beautifully lit, it abounds with details and colors... set in a small village in Tibet, a wise voice over tells a timeless legend, while two children begin to love each other. For 22 minutes, the festival frenzy fades, and we're being transported elsewhere.

To see the Palais from The Castre Museum puts the Festival in perspective: it doesn't seem that big, after all... And the clouds reminds us that, in Cannes just like anywhere else, Nature can dispose of us at any time. One wave would suffice to wreck the party.

Most students in cinema schools don't actually have passion about films, they merely wish to become famous. But nowadays, everyone and anyone can have their fifteen minutes of fame. As a way towards success, making a film therefore does seem like the long way around. In this prospect, the situation of Cannes now appears as a phenomenon of inertia.

As an introduction to this serie of Cannes Bubbles which shall share with you the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival, this quotation - "Copyright? An author has only duties" - by JLG (Jean-Luc Godard) reminds authors that now more than ever, making films is a matter of engagement.
