The 63rd Cannes Film Festival presided over by U.S. director Tim Burton brings clearly us to evoke the most frequent collaborators of this director: the prolific American composer Daniel Robert “Danny” Elfman, born May 29, 1953 and married to American actress Bridget Fonda (“Army of Darkness”, “Jackie Brown”).

– une des performances du groupe vainqueur ce jour-là dans l’émission The Gong Show en 1976 ;
– Dany Elfman chantant “Minnie the Moocher” de Cab Calloway dans le rôle de Satan dans la comédie musicale de Richard Elfman, “Forbidden Zone”, réalisé en 1982 et inspiré de l’univers du groupe (la production d’une suite a été lancée en 2009 avec la rumeur d’un possible retour de Danny au générique) ;

Men In Black”, “Spider Man”, …).

Nominated for several Oscars, winner of a Grammy Award for the theme song from the movie “Batman” by Tim Burton (1990) and an Emmy Award for the musical theme from the television series “Desperate Housewives” (2005), invariably associated with the work of Tim Burton, Danny Elfman has also written numerous scores for films and television series of other directors.

Flashback. Born in 1953 in Los Angeles and after a first experience of performing and composing music at 18 in Grand Magic Circus of the French actor and director Jerome Savary, Danny Elfman formed with his brother Richard an American New Wave band (“the term New Wave at first generally was synonymous with punk rock before being considered a genre in its own right that incorporated aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, and disco and 1960s pop music, as well as much of the original punk rock sound and ethos, such as an emphasis on short and punchy songs,” IMDB), The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo in 1972, renamed Oingo Boingo later. Led by songwriter Danny Elfman, the band will produce soundtracks for movies and crazy Halloween concerts Halloween. On the following videos, you will discover:
– A performance of the group in the tv show The Gong Show in 1976;
– Danny Elfman singing “Minnie the Moocher” by Cab Calloway in the role of Satan in the musical by Richard Elfman, “Forbidden Zone”, produced in 1982 and inspired by the niverse of the band (the production of a sequel has been launched in 2009 with the rumor of a possible return of Danny in the credits);
– Danny Elfman singing a success song of the band for the movie “Weird Science” by John Hughes (1985) which will become a serie after.

It’s in 1985 with his first collaboration with Tim Burton for the movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” that starts the career of Danny as a composer of film music. And it’s through his work on “Batman” by Tim Burton (1990) that films and successes will be linked together.

Although he has studied music later (a guitar provided by his brother at 16 years) and has no solid musical training, this has not prevent Danny from directing orchestration based on many influences ( Bela Bartok, Philip Glass, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Lou Harrison, Harry Partch, Sergei Prokofiev, Nino Rota, Igor Stravinsky, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, …) and the help of its recognized orchestror, the former guitarist of Oingo Boingo, Steve Bartek.

It’s finally after a falling out with Tim Burton after “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (it’s Howard Shore who’s composed the music of the next film of the dirctor, ” Ed Wood “), Danny Elfman will begin working with other filmmakers with varying degrees of success both on film productions and television productions, with a lot of soundtracks for blockbusters (“Hulk,” “Men In Black”, “Spider Man”, …).

Prolific composer, Danny Elfman has agreed to write a classical orchestration with a work entitled “Serenada Schizophrana”, consisting of six movements and presented at Carnegie Hall in 2005.

From “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” to “Alice in Wonderland”, from still craft film to blockbuster, Danny Elfman’s music has been alternately atmospheric, baroque, poetic, joyful or scratchy, minimalist or symphony.
