C'est tout de même une drôle d'idée de sortir un film appelé "Persécution" en pleine période de fêtes en France. Mais après tout, c'est aussi cela le cinéma du metteur en scène Patrice Chéreau : prendre le spectateur à rebrousse-poil avec des films aux émotions exacerbées !

 It's still a funny idea to release a film called "Persecution" in the midst of holidays in France. But after all, this is also the French director Patrice Chereau's cinema : to take the viewer in the wrong way with heightened emotions films!

Synopsis : Un inconnu. Daniel, 35 ans, est poursuivi par un inconnu qui s'introduit chez lui régulièrement et l'espionne systématiquement. Comment ce garçon est-il entré dans la vie de Daniel ? Daniel lui-même ne s'en souvient pas. Un jour cet inconnu se poste devant lui, le regarde et lui dit : "Tu es l'homme de ma vie". Daniel le chasse.
Une femme. Daniel vit seul, mais il va deux ou trois fois par semaine chez Sonia, cette femme qu'il persécute et idéalise en même temps. Il ne lui passe rien et vit dans une dépendance affective totale à son égard. Cette femme lui donne tout ce qu'elle peut mais elle travaille beaucoup, et a peu de temps pour elle. Elle veut aimer Daniel et vivre une vie autonome, un amour apaisé, mais il s'acharne à lui réclamer plus...

Toute l'idée du film est résumée dès ses premières images :

• Persécution de la scène où une passagère d'un wagon de métro va recevoir sans broncher deux gifles d'une SDF et que Daniel (le personnage joué par Romain Duris) va tenter de faire réagir en vain ;
  
• Persécution d'un générique où les noms du casting et de l'équipe technique au lieu de s'effacer au fur et à mesure, s'entassent les uns sur les autres ;
  
• Persécution au tout début du film d'un écran noir assourdi par une ambiance étrange et irréelle de bruits de machinerie avant l'arrivée salvatrice de la lumière (métro en panne).

Tout est dit : le personnage principal (Daniel) interprété par Romain Duris devra accepter de se livrer, de faire la lumière sur lui-même pour se sortir du cercle vicieux de la persécution (étant victime et acteur de celle-ci) dans lequel il s'est vite retrouvé enfermé sans s'en rendre compte. Figure du cercle joliment signifié par cette étrange danse entre Daniel et Sonia (Charlotte Gainsbourg) qui n'arrive jamais à s'aborder directement et frontalement mais se tournent plutôt autour (et ce dès la mystérieuse scène de bar de leurs premières retrouvailles dans le film).

Filmant en cinémascope et au plus près un Romain Duris épatant (qui depuis "De battre mon corps s'est arrêté" de Jacques Audiard voit de nouveaux rôles s'offrir à lui) face une Charlotte Gainsbourg distante (qui dans la lignée d"Antichrist" de Lars von Trier, poursuit dans ses rôles de femme belle et tourmentée) et un Jean-Hugues Anglade amoureux transi (qui retrouve Patrice Chéreau plus de 25 ans après), le réalisateur Patrice Chéreau (toujours aussi excellent dans la direction d'acteurs) persécute ses personnages pendant plus d'une heure et demi avant de peut-être les libérer sur une belle et étrange chanson, "Mysteries of Love" de David Lynch et d'Angelo Badalamenti ("Blue Vevet", 1986) :

in a darkness and the mysteries of love  come clear and dance  in light  in you in me and show  that we are Love   Sometimes a wind blows and the mysteries of Love come clear."  Bon film, "Persécution" nous plonge dans une bien étrange forme de folie amoureuse dans laquelle il est pourtant si simple de tomber sans s'en rendre compte.

Synopsis: A stranger. Daniel, 35, is pursued by a stranger who enters in his house regularly and spies him systematically. How is this man entered the life of Daniel? Daniel himself does not remember. One day the stranger stood in front of him, looked at him and said: "You are the man of my life." Daniel dismisses him. A woman. Daniel lives alone, but he goes two or three times a week to Sonia's place, the woman he idealizes and persecutes in the same time. He lives in a total emotional dependence with her. This woman gives all she can but she works hard and has little time for her. She wants to love Daniel and to have an independent living, an appeased love, but he persists in his claim for more ... The whole idea of the film is summarized in his early images:

• Persecution in the scene where a passenger on a subway will receive two blows without flinching by an SDF and that Daniel (the character played by Romain Duris) will attempt to make her respond in vain;
  
• Persecution in the opening credits where names of the cast and the crew instead of fading, pile upon each other;
  
• Persecution at the beginning of the film with a black screen deafened by a strange and unreal atmosphere noise of machinery before the saving arrival of the light (subway failure).

Everything is said: the main character (Daniel) played by Romain Duris will have to agree to deliver himself, to bring himself to light to break the vicious circle of persecution (being victim and actor thereof) in which he soon found himself trapped without realizing it. Circle figure nicely served by this mysterious dance between Daniel and Sonia (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who can never approach one another directly and frontally but rather turn around (and that since the mysterious scene in the bar of their first reunion in the film). 

Shooting in widescreen and closer to a terrific Romain Duris (who since "The Beat that my heart skipped" by Jacques Audiard sees new roles for him) against a distant Charlotte Gainsbourg (who as in "Antichrist "by Lars von Trier, continues in a beautiful and troubled woman character) and a lovesick Jean-Hugues Anglade (who works with Patrice Chereau for more than 25 years later), the director Patrice Chereau (always as good at directing actors ) persecutes us for over an hour and a half before we can perhaps be free with the music of "Mysteries of Love" by David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti ("Blue Velvet", 1986):
